Our Hearts are Broken

Forgive me, but I have to get on my soapbox this week.  Like many of you, I spent much of the past few days thinking about the children and families in Connecticut whose lives will never be the same.  Our President said it best, “our hearts are broken.”

But this shooting shouldn’t just make us sad – it should make us mad!  You see, our firm has worked with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence for more than 10 years. It’s the kind of issue that gets into your blood. Once you know the facts, you’re hooked. Here’s a few:

  • Despite having a federal law requiring background checks, some 40% of guns are sold with absolutely no check—at gun shows, through ‘private’ sellers and online.
  • 57% of guns recovered at crime scenes come from just 1% of dealers—dealers who could easily be shut down for illegal gun trafficking.

People are getting rich off of the 300 million guns that currently flood our streets—while we face an epidemic of gun deaths that grossly exceeds that of our industrialized nations.

Those people who profit from guns are the ones calling on us not to “politicize” this tragedy. But make no mistake, their comments are blatantly political.  They just prefer that we not have a conversation about solutions because they are perfectly content with the status quo.

It’s time the rest of us let them know the “status quo is not ok”—not when innocent children are being gunned down at school.
