I have always believed in the power of words, that’s one of the many reasons I come to work so energized everyday. Because, at Impact I get to see that belief put into action everyday through the work and stories of our clients. I have seen first hand how the power of stories is a mighty agent for change.
So when I discovered another local organization who believed just as much as I do about the power of words to inspire good and change lives, I just knew that I had to get involved.
Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop is founded on the principal that self-expression and a love of reading can help young people to achieve their highest potential and become powerful voices for change within their communities. Through providing incarcerated DC youth with necessary tools, inspiration and community support, they help young “budding poets” onto a different path for their lives. They believe in the power of self-expression through poetry and it’s ability to change your life.
With the recent media attention on the outcome of the Ferguson trial and a growing sense that there are injustices in this country that still persist, finding an organization that has been working to create hope in a mostly dark situation feels like the best use of my #GivingTuesday contribution. We can sit here and debate wither the justice system has an unfair biased against the black community, but in my mind the real focus should be on these kids.
I was truly touched by one young man’s story. No child should ever have to say, “My friends and I knew that one of two things was going to happen to us. We were going to prison or we were going to be killed.” And even though this has become an unfortunate norm in many communities sprinkled across the US, organizations that are fighting to change that inspire me.
What missions inspire you? How are you willing to help where you see need? Think about it this #GivingTuesday.
