For Giving Tuesday this year, I am donating to the NAACP Criminal Justice Program because it has never been more clear that there is far too little justice in our current system. What has happened in Ferguson, Missouri these past weeks is only one small example of race bias in our criminal justice system. Every day when I leave for work from my home in a historically black neighborhood in Washington, DC, I see far too many young, capable African American men who are not at work. Not because they don’t want to be but because far too many of them have had far too little education in a city that offers mostly professional jobs and because far too many of them have had some involvement with the criminal justice system. Black men are routinely stopped, frisked, and searched—and many eventually are arrested and branded as criminals for the rest of their lives.
African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites and given harsher sentences for similar crimes. Some estimates show that 1 in 3 black men could be expected to spend time in prison during his lifetime. My #GivingTuesday gift is an investment in writing a different kind of future where we do not waste the talents of so many of our citizens.
