At a time when millions of Americans still struggle to find meaningful employment that pays a living wage the nonprofit sector deserves a bit more attention. According to The People’s Sector report by the Urban Institute (with thanks to Roger at the Agitator for the tip) the nonprofit sector employs an estimated 14.4 million people, and one in 10 employees in the U.S. works for a nonprofit.
There’s been a lot of debate about what to call our sector: nonprofit, third sector, charitable sector, NGO, and more. But no matter what they call us, we are a powerhouse. Nonprofits currently make up 5.4 percent of the US gross domestic product (GDP).
That’s impressive. But here’s what’s even more impressive . . . We’re the ones who feed the homeless, heal the sick, raise the curtain, fight for justice, and make our world a better place.
Those of you reading this blog are in this group. You are some of the most brilliant, dedicated, and compassionate people I know.
So just stop for a minute and think about what good company you are in. And during this season of giving thanks, give yourself a little pat on the back. You deserve it.
